Tiny Tools

An independent software studio

Small tools for
everyday problems.

Tiny Tools is an independent software studio. Each project starts with a practical problem and a bit of curiosity about how to make things easier.

Projects

Tiny Inbox

One place for things to follow up on

Available

The problem

It’s easy to agree to do something in a message, then lose track of it. Moving it into a task app is another step to remember.

How it works

Save items from chat, email, a browser extension, or an AI tool, then review them in one inbox. Each integration connects to the same API, so items can be handled the same way regardless of where they came from.

Sprout Words

Word practice on iPhone, iPad, and Fire tablets

Available

The problem

Kids need word practice that works on the tablet or phone already at home, even without Wi-Fi. Setting up an account shouldn’t be part of the lesson.

How it works

Short “hear, find, and spell” rounds use audio included with the app. Progress stays on the device, so practice works offline on iPhone, iPad, and Fire tablets. No ads, accounts, or tracking.

Family Playlist

A video library your family chooses

Coming soon

The problem

Parents trust particular videos and creators, but handing over a tablet can open the door to a lot more than they chose.

How it works

Approve YouTube videos or channels for each child, organize them into shelves, and set daily watch limits. Kids can browse their approved choices, save favorites, and make a playlist of their own. Coming to Fire tablets.

Consumable Calculators

When to replace household supplies

Available

The problem

Advice on when to replace a filter or razor blade often gives everyone the same answer. How much you use it matters, and finding that detail can take a lot of reading.

How it works

Enter how you use an item to get a replacement estimate based on sourced guidance. A circular display shows the interval and matches the site’s logo. All 16 calculators share the same code and design, including light and dark themes. Adding another means supplying its data and rules.

Open-source templates

Tiny Inbox’s backend, integration service, and web app each started from one of these templates. They hold the shared setup, such as sign-in, accounts, and testing, so a new project can begin with working code. Each is MIT licensed.

  • elixir-api-corePublic template

    Used by Tiny Inbox API

Phoenix API with multi-tenant accounts, authentication, and roles.

    ElixirMIT license

  • node-edge-corePublic template

    Used by Tiny Inbox integrations

TypeScript service for webhooks, chat adapters, and MCP servers.

    TypeScriptMIT license

  • web-app-corePublic template

Used by Tiny Inbox web app

React app with sign-in, a typed API client, routing, and an app shell.

    TypeScriptMIT license

Possible next projects

An idea that needs a first version

An idea can be hard to start when it’s still a list of possibilities. A small MVP gives people something to try before deciding what else to build.

Internal tools

A dashboard that saves someone a weekly spreadsheet exercise, or a way to look up company information without hunting through documents. Small tools built around how a team already works.

Everyday uses for AI

Reusable instructions and skills for tasks a team does often. The work includes trying them on actual examples, checking the results, and documenting how to use them.

An AI-built app that needs attention

A prototype may work most of the time and still be hard to change. Fixing bugs, reviewing the code, and adding tests can make the next change less of a gamble.

About the studio

Tiny Tools is an independent software studio run by Mark Nelson, a software engineer with nearly twenty years of startup experience. The projects here are his own, built around problems he’s encountered at work and at home.
